Investments Sometimes Do Not Work Out, and That Is OK

No investor has a perfect track record. Nor should they expect one. Six years ago, I invested in a promising startup, Curve.
They are a British fintech startup with strong potential. Recently, the company was acquired by $LLOY.L (Lloyd's Banking Group PLC) at a fractional valuation. The result is this: common shareholders like me will not receive anything from the deal. It is disappointing š and it does not feel fair, but this is exactly the type of risk that comes with early-stage investing.

To be clear: This is not affecting my portfolio on $ETOR (eToro Group LTD) , it was a separate private investment, my personal loss. I still write about it; the principal is not much different from a publicly listed company.
A large percentage of startups fail to return capital to investors. According to CB Insights, around 70 percent of startups do not provide a meaningful return.
This is why risk management is the core of any long-term investing strategy. Curve did not work out, but other investments have. I invested in Ripple, the company behind $XRP , during its private rounds. Ripple is expected to go public in 2026 after strong revenue growth and multiple funding rounds. My shares have appreciated roughly tenfold š so far. One strong winner can more than offset several losers.
The same principle applies to public markets. Listed companies are less likely to collapse, but they are not immune. History offers many examples of well-known names going bankrupt despite broad confidence. Diversification is the best protection. My portfolio includes more than 40 assets across equities, crypto, and ETFs. This spread allows the portfolio to stay stable even if one or two positions fail āļø.
Successful investing is not about avoiding losses. It is about making sure no single loss can threaten your long-term plan. Spread risk, size positions sensibly, and allow your winners to compound over time š. Losses are part of the journey, not the end of it. Stay disciplined, stay diversified, and keep your focus on the long horizon š.
